In just 10 days we’ll be welcoming the start of a New Year and new decade, don’t get caught wearing something less than spectacular to ring in the New Year.

New Year’s Eve is notoriously one of the hardest occasions to dress for. Finding the right balance between festive, flattering, feminine and practical is not always an easy task. Keeping a few of the tried and true fashion guidelines in mind with your finger on the pulse of which styles are hot right now, is sure to start you on the right track to finding your perfect NYE dress.

Color

When stuck in a style rut, the first thing we reach for is the ever faithful little black dress. With a little more time to plan ahead for your NYE attire, why not dive into color?

Hues such as emerald green and cobalt blue are regal and bold. They play well off of many skin tones and have the ability to make even a simple dress stand out when accessorized just right. If you’re attending a black tie NYE event, these colors will exude sophistication. Punchy brights such a fuchsia and corals are youthful and festive, perfect for a casual, fun NYE party.

Sequins

There is no escaping the sequined holiday dress. If you want all eyes on you when you step into the room, a sparkling sequined number that will catch all the light is your dress.

In seasons past, the fitted sequin mini was hot. This year, more loosely fitting silhouettes are popular. There are loads of sequined dress options to choose from. This popular trend comes in different colors, patterns and styles to suit a wide range of body types and tastes.

Body Con Dress

It’s all in the name, bodycon is short for body conscious and typically refers to bandage style dresses. If you are proud of your figure and 100 percent confident with your physique then this is the dress for you! This style is not just for waif thin women, a well made bodycon dress sculpts the curves of the female figure which means it’s ideal for curvy women as well.

Unless you’re in the mood for treating yourself, chances are you won’t be rocking the creme de la creme of bodycon dresses from designer label Hérve Léger, but there are other great options from quality contemporary brands such as Fumblin Foe.

Look for versions that have structure. The best body con dresses will feature curved seams around your thighs - visually creating a flattering hourglass silhouette.

Feminine Details

Statement bows and floral appliques are a huge trend this holiday season. Adorn yourself like a perfectly wrapped present in an ultra-feminine NYE dress with a standout bow or floral detail. When wearing a dress with a statement detail, remember to keep your jewelry to a minimum and your make-up toned down. Too many competing factors in your look will make you appear overdone, so let that statement detail shine and all the other elements work as the supporting cast.

Separates

You don’t have to don a dress to look stellar on New Year’s Eve. Pairing two complimentary separates can do the trick just a phenomenally as a great dress. Separates also allow you to combine your favorite elements from great dress styles into one statement look. Think a loose racerback sequin top with a sleek bodycon skirt or a delicate nude lace blouse with a statement bow, paired with a boldly colored bottom.

If balancing your proportions is your goal, separates are definitely the way to go. If you have a full bust but narrow hips or the reverse with wide hips and a smaller bust, pairing separates of different sizes will help you to get the perfect fit without seeking out a tailor.

Let your personality shine in a knockout NYE dress and start the New Year off looking your absolute best!
