Ferguson, a graduate of the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, is a published author who released his first book, Bliss, in 2000.   In 2004, Ferguson published Forest of the Sprites, the first installment of his trilogy of magical adventures...

WEST END, Grand Bahama Island – Baseball Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt’s fundraising fishing tournament to benefit cystic fibrosis returns to Old Bahama Bay by Ginn sur Mer from May 15-17.

 

The former professional baseball player, who played his entire career for the Philadelphia Phillies, launched the Mike Schmidt Winner’s Circle Invitational in 2001 in honor of Brett Weinstein, the son of a close friend who passed away after a 20-year battle with cystic fibrosis.

 

In its eighth year, the Mike Schmidt Winner’s Circle Invitational has raised more than $1 million for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to finding a cure for the hereditary disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of more than 70,000 children and adults worldwide...

West End, Grand Bahama Island –   Staff members from Old Bahama Bay by Ginn sur Mer recently took time out from personal weekend schedules to participate in clean-up efforts at the nearby West End Primary School.

 

Dozens of resort employees cleaned classrooms, repaired lunch tables, removed safety hazards and cleared overgrown brush and trash from the school’s grounds.   Landscaping firm Austin Outdoors also assisted by providing the heavy equipment used to clear away debris.

West End, Grand Bahama Island –   Young author, Rouen Robinson recently read excerpts of his book Random Moments Rule to students at West End Primary School as part of their weekly reading program coordinated by Old Bahama Bay by Ginn sur Mer.

 

Robinson shared some of the 140 poems in his book that he describes as a time capsule of his life and some of the relationships that have shaped it.

 

“I was in a car accident last year and it left me with time to think about some of the goals in my life that I haven’t reached as yet,” he said.  “One of them was publishing a collection of my poetry as a way of leaving my mark on the world, to show I was here...”

WEST END, Grand Bahama Island –   Local children’s book writer, Carol Hughes read to a group of West End Primary School students as part of a reading program recently implemented by Old Bahama Bay by Ginn sur Mer.

 

Hughes, who published such books as ‘Who Let the Dog Out?’ and ‘Feeling Hot, Hot, Hot’ is one of several local authors to participate in the weekly reading program for grade schoolers that was launched by resort employees.

Rahming met and worked alongside the communications staff at Ginn Resorts’ headquarters in Celebration, Florida and also spent time observing and interacting with Ginn Reunion Resort staff members in sales, reservations, public relations and marketing.

West End, Grand Bahama Island –Karma.”   That was the word of the week at the second installment of the Bahamas Wahoo Challenge at Old Bahama Bay. It seems that this tournament is susceptible to karma… good karma in particular.   See, last year the tournament committee needed a ride to West End due to a boat issue.   They also needed a boat to help transport all the t-shirts and bags over.   “Nothin’s Wild” volunteered to shuttle the committee to West End and “Wake Up Call” agreed to transport the shirts. What were the results?   Well, “Nothin’s Wild” weighed in a 95-pound behemoth and won the tournament plus $48,000 dollars and “Wake Up Call” took home second place and $18,000.   There is that good karma we are talking about.   But that was last year...

Ericka Hield, who serves as Assistant Food & Beverage Director, was named Manager of the Quarter for her consistent management efforts at the resort.  

 

According to Hield, a 14-year tourism veteran, a love of the hospitality industry is in her blood.   As a child she observed the pride displayed by her father and other family members who all worked in tourism. “I would encourage others to enter the tourism industry because there are a lot of opportunities for young Bahamians to excel in this field,” she said...

After seven years of service, Ezra Russell has retired from the position of executive chef at Old Bahama Bay at Ginn sur Mer in West End, Grand Bahama.

Interestingly, Russell started his career in the hospitality industry in 1967 as a bellman at the former Grand Bahama Hotel which was located on the same property where Old Bahama Bay sits today.
