WEST END, Grand Bahama Island–  Thirteen young ladies charmed their way into the hearts of judges and well-wishers as they vied for the titles of Little, Junior Miss and Miss West End.   Capturing the crowns were, Ansonique Hanna, Ashanti Stuart and Mariah Williams, who each received $1,000 scholarships.

 

Sponsored by Ginn sur Mer, contestants were judged on speech, talent and evening gowns.

West End, Grand Bahama Island - Lester Fernander has been appointed the new director of security at Ginn sur Mer.  

 

An 11-year police veteran, Fernander previously served as director of security at the Westin & Sheraton at Our Lucaya Resort and holds a degree in electrical technology from I.T.T. Technical Institute.

 

As director of security, Fernander’s duty is to safeguard the assets of Ginn sur Mer.   He conducts all property crime investigations, pre-employment screenings, first aid and CPR instructions and security officer supervision.

West End, Grand Bahama Island Old Bahama Bay by Ginn sur Mer recently hosted a group of North American meeting and fund-raising event planners participating in a Bahamas Ministry of Tourism familiarization trip to Grand Bahama Island.

The 14 participants traveled from Washington D.C., New Jersey, Maryland, Arizona and Texas, and were accompanied by Bahamas Ministry of Tourism representatives, Anika Williams of Freeport, Virginia Kelly of Nassau and Jeannie Gibson of Atlanta.

“This visit allowed us to showcase our existing resort facilities, amenities and new 5,000 square-foot meeting pavilion due to open later this year – an ideal location for incentive trips, executive retreats, corporate meetings and wedding groups,” said Brent Ingraham, vice president of resort sales for Old Bahama Bay. “The group was able to experience our guest offerings firsthand and was pleasantly surprised by what they described as a ‘hidden treasure...’”

A 14-year tourism veteran, Gardiner began working in the hospitality industry as a front office and reservations clerk. She quickly moved up the ranks, presently serving as front office manager at Old Bahama Bay.

The donation will help the group cover the cost of creating first-class costumes for performances at special occasions and holidays. Formed in 2001, the West End Conquerors regularly perform at Old Bahama Bay by Ginn sur Mer events.

West End, Grand Bahama Island - During a recent Old Bahama Bay Home Owners Weekend, Scholarship recipients of The Kohn Foundation were on  hand at Old Bahama Bay for a cheque presentation by Ginn sur Mer. Alexis Nairn spoke to all of the homeowners on behalf of the eleven students.

Old Bahama Bay was the location for an exciting Opti race organized by the GB Sailing Club.   Approximately 25 eager youth entered, with 13 boats participating in the race.   Determined to keep their boats upright, the Sailing club members had their hands full as  strong winds created challenges every step of the way.

 

The GB Sailing Club has been operational for one year and meets every other Sunday at the Sir Charles Hayward Yacht Club, Fortune Bay to teach the youth how to swim, sail and to learn boatmanship and sportsmanship.   Board members include: Sarah and Ricky Rolle, Derek Gape, Penny Roberts, Chris Paine, Chris Lowe and Joe Thompson. The Club is seeking to get disadvantaged youth from the Western and Eastern ends of the island involved in this sport.   The young members will be participating in the GB Regatta slated for June 19-22nd at Taino Beach...

Wade Smith, Senior Vice President of Ginn Golf Division is proud to announce that four Bahamians are at the forefront of this new technology being used for the first time in The Bahamas.

 

Because a strong irrigation system is necessary to ensure the highest quality of golf courses, Ginn sur Mer has chosen to use high-density polyethylene (HDPE) PVC pipe which is the strongest pipe available to withstand the environmental conditions typical to The Bahamas. The pipe comes in 40 feet lengths and ranges from three inches to 30 inches in width. The pipes are joined by a process called heat fusion welding, whereby, matching pipes are prepared by cleaning and facing...

West End, Grand Bahama Island  More than seventeen years ago, a bright young student named Karla Fox penned the words to a short story titled Home Sweet Home.   Never did she imagine that almost two decades later she would stand in front of an audience of eager youngsters introducing them to her published work.

 

During their weekly reading program sponsored by Old Bahama Bay by Ginn sur Mer, students of the West End Primary School listened attentively to the adventures of George, a curly tail lizard, who embarks on a search for a new home.

 

Even though Fox was honored by the invitation to participate in the book reading, she was surprised by the request...
