A number of businesses were recipients of grants from the Small Business Development Centre and the Office of the Prime Minister on Friday, at the Office of the Prime Minister, Grand Bahama.

On Wednesday 13 November, a number of employees of the Broadcasting Corporation of The Bahamas’ (BCB) Northern Service in Freeport called in sick over concerns of the presence of mold in the building that was badly damaged by Hurricane Dorian.

While the management of the BCB is disappointed in this action, which impacted operations, the health and welfare of all employees of the Corporation remain a priority for the management and by extension the Office of the Parliamentary Secretary with responsibility for the BCB...

GB Utility making headway towards return of potable water after Hurricane Dorian - Nov 9, 2019 - 10:50:56 PM

The Grand Bahama Utility Company Limited (GBUC) confirms steady progress towards our full return to potable water on the island of Grand Bahama.  Prior to the onset of Hurricane Dorian, tap water provided to the community of Grand Bahama was below 600 ppm (salt particle content per million parts of water), which bettered by a large margin the 1,000 ppm World Health Organization (WHO) standard for consumption. In certain other jurisdictions, 1,500 ppm is considered an acceptable level. 

In addition to the damaged pumping stations, which were brought back on line within 5-7 days of the storm to restore the island’s running water ‘distribution’, the wrath of Hurricane Dorian compromised the island’s ‘supply’ of fresh salt-free water in Wellfields 1, 3, 6, comprising some 220 wells in total, which account for 35%...

Two months of hard work, sweat, and determination culminated in the reopening of the Bahamian Brewery & Beverage (BBB) Company’s flagship retail store in Freeport on Monday. Jimmy’s Wines & Spirits officially reopened its doors, once again welcoming its scores of loyal customers as well as a staff complement of at least 12 people who will resume work.

“We are so proud of our staff who have really made this possible,” said Donny Delahey, BBB Grand Bahama General Manager.

It is now six weeks since Dorian’s passage through The Bahamas and the Grand Bahama Utility Company (GBUC), a subsidiary of Port Group Ltd (PGL) continues to work unflaggingly to fully restore its water services to residents across the Island.

The Bahamas oil spill during Hurricane Dorian contaminated water in critical wetland habitat, including an area more than one mile away from the spill, according to sampling done by Waterkeepers Bahamas, Save the Bays, and Waterkeeper Alliance.

The groups took water samples at five locations near the Equinor/STATOIL spill, sending 54 individual water samples to Environmental Chemists, a certified water testing lab in Wilmington, N.C...

Carnival Cruise Line announced today that it will resume regular calls to Grand Bahama beginning this Friday, Oct. 11, when Carnival Pride will dock in Freeport.  Carnival Elation will follow on Sunday, Oct. 13 and Carnival Freedom on Tuesday, Oct. 15.

Grand Bahama Shipyard today announced that it dry-docked its first vessel since reopening the shipyard shortly after Hurricane Dorian hit The Bahamas earlier this month. Taipei Trader, a 9,932-ton containership operated by Lomar Shipping Limited, docked at the No. 3 dock this week, a major step in the return of normal operations to the shipyard.

In the wee hours of Thursday morning, more than 100 crew members from Royal Caribbean’s Empress of the Seas became the first to activate the company’s disaster relief operation to bring relief supplies and 20,000 daily meals to the Freeport, Bahamas community.
