Defence Force Marines apprehend Haitian Migrants - May 29, 2018 - 4:07:20 PM

Acting on information received earlier today, Royal Bahamas Defence Force Patrol Craft P-44, coxswained by Chief Petty Officer Theodore Thompson intercepted a Haitian sailing sloop near the Exuma Chain Monday evening.

The 40–ft Haitian sailing vessel was apprehended 6 nautical miles west of Beacon Cay near the top of the Exuma chain of Islands shortly after 6 p.m. Approximately 80 Haitian migrants were aboard the unseaworthy vessel.

The Royal Bahamas Defence Force organized a sea trip for interested media houses today. Two Defence Force patrol craft P-129 and P-45, coxswained by Petty Officer Brian Anderson and Sub Lieutenant Themo Berkley respectively, took 7 media representatives to get a first-hand view of the southern coastline of New Providence. The aim of the trip was to enable members of the Press to experience and appreciate one aspect of the many environments in which the Defence Force operates...

Earlier Monday morning, on this US Memorial Holiday, a ceremony was held in honour of ten US servicemen who died after their military plane had crashed in waters off the south coast of New Providence. The ceremony was held on the southwest coast of New Providence at a monument that was constructed in their honour.

In attendance at the ceremony were the Governor General of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas, Dame Marguerite Pindling, the US Charge d'Affairs, US Embassy, the Minister of National Security, the Honourable Marvin Dames, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Honourable Darren Henfield, family members of the fallen, and other dignitaries...

Haitian Migrants Apprehended in New Providence - May 28, 2018 - 1:33:32 PM

An ongoing search for additional migrants is currently being conducted after several Haitian migrants were apprehended in a combined effort between Police, Immigration and Defence officials early Sunday morning.

Shortly after midnight, a 35-ft a Haitian sloop made landfall off Venice Bay, South New Providence.  Efforts by security forces resulted in the capture of 26 migrants, who were turned over to Immigration officials for further processing.  Search for other migrants are ongoing...

Coral Harbour Base, 19 MAY ‘18 (RBDF): The Royal Bahama Defence Force received a major boost in manpower on Friday past after 111 recruits successfully graduated from New Entry Training at the Coral Harbour Base.

With scores of families and loved ones cheering them on, the squad of 93 males and 18 females is the latest group of entrants to join the Defence Force, which recently celebrated 38 years as an official entity. New Entry 55/Woman Entry 24, commenced recruit training on 8th January 2018 and have completed 18 weeks of rigorous basic military training. The program started out with 120 recruits, the largest combined Entry for the Force.

When HMBS Flamingo slipped HMBS Coral Harbour on May 8, 1980, the crew of 19 Officers and Marines had just begun what was intended to be a routine patrol. While many others were preparing to pay tribute to mothers everywhere, this ship’s company was about to experience what it truly meant to lay down one's life for one's country.

The Royal Bahamas Defence Force had just become an official organization on March 31, 1980. Prior to this, Officers and Marines had commenced training in 1978, the year HMBS Flamingo and her sister ship, HMBS Marlin, were built and sailed from England to The Bahamas.  The Commanding Officer of HMBS Flamingo was Commander Amos Rolle, a young Exumian.

President of The Bahamas Press Club 2014 Anthony Capron said it is with profound sadness, the organization notes the passing of Gina Morley, a faithful member and colleague. She died on Thursday, May 3, 2018.

Ms Morley was a former journalist who became an attorney and hosted the genealogy programme “Bahamian Bio” on Sunday nights at 7pm, and the “It’s The Law” legal tips, which aired at various times during the weekday lineup on Guardian Radio.

“Ms Morley was a valued member of The Bahamas Press Club, who contributed much to the progress of the BPC and her sage advice will be sorely missed..."

Quick thinking marines attached to the Royal Bahamas Defence Force Harbour Patrol Unit prevented much damage assisted in securing one of three breakway freighters on Tuesday afternoon near Potter;s Cay Dock.

After receiving information at 1:00 p.m. of a breakaway Haitian freighter, Patrol Craft P—115 was dispatched to the area of Potter’s Cay east of the Sir Sidney Poitier Bridge. On arrival, they discovered that a 68-ft freighter had drifted west along the channel. Attempts to anchor the vessel were unsuccessful...

Hampton University (HU) and University of The Bahamas (UB) are collaborating with experts in the fields of public health, population health, clinical health and research to address health disparities in the Caribbean and the United States through the new Hampton University Center for Caribbean Health Research (HU-CCHR).  

The HU-CCHR will conduct research and programmatic activities to tackle the health challenges that plague populations of African descent. The center will serve as a convening and coordinating body. HMBS Rolly Gray damaged a set of propellers after departing Coral Harbour on routine patrol shortly after 7 a.m. Sumday morning. The exact cause of the incident is being investigated. 
Out of the nine Damen-built patrol craft, seven are operational with one being prepared for routine drydocking. 

Rolly Gray had damaged her propellers earlier this year resulting in replacement. This process took approximately one week to complete prior to Rolly Gray resuming patrol...
