Dr. Paul De Luca received his B.Sc in Biology in 1995 and M.Sc in
Zoology in 1997 from the University of Toronto. In 2000 he joined the
College of The Bahamas as a Lecturer in Biology. Upon completion of his
contract in 2002 he began his Ph.D. at the University of Missouri. He
obtained his Ph.D. in 2007 studying insect communication and then
returned to the University of Toronto as a Post Doctoral Fellow in 2009.
In 2011 he returned to COB as an Assistant Professor and completed
another two year contract before relocating to Ithaca...

20 New Grand Bahama Shipyard Apprentices Join BTVI - Oct 2, 2018 - 7:58:15 PM
The Grand Bahama Shipyard recently launched its 2018 apprenticeship
cohort with 20 students attending the Bahamas Technical and Vocational
Institute (BTVI).
The apprentices will be taking courses in good
housekeeping, incident reporting, safety, basic industry information
and procedures at the shipyard. They will also learn basic draftsman
skills and use of relevant materials. After four years of training and
upon successful completion of the program, the apprentices will be
offered positions such as engine mechanics, welders, pipefitters and
electricians.

Bahama Port Authority (GBPA), have been working around the clock,
ensuring that they meet their obligations of upgrades to the City of
Freeport for the 2018 year. This charge, conducted on an annual basis,
began with detailed assessments throughout the city, identifying areas
of concern-such as landscaping,dilapidated building structures, or road
work- that require attention. The demolition of derelict buildings has
been one of the focal points, in an effort to beautify areas of the

have more and new options to prepare themselves for the workplace,
within the island’s growing Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) sector.
Although Grand Bahama is a new and small player within this
multi-billion-dollar industry; executives at The Grand Bahama Port
Authority, Limited (GBPA), say that Freeport is ready to capture a
greater share of the consistent growth and investments occurring within
this burgeoning sector.
A little over two years ago, GBPA and
partners, itelBPO Solutions, established the Contact Center Education
Initiative (CCEI), and to-date more than 1000 students have completed

August 31, 2018 — As part of its continued effort to
digitize key business processes and customer-related information, Grand
Bahama Port Authority (GBPA) has launched GBPA Library, a virtual
document library of information relevant to the company, its licensees,
and the community.
The growing library, which currently holds
over 160 documents, was created to give GBPA employees, licensees, and
members of the general public quick access to official papers such as
the Hawksbill Creek Agreement, zoning laws and business license
applications. For ease of use, the database organizes documents into
five main categories: licensing, byelaws, forms, covenants, and
restrictions. Users may choose to browse through the pages of the site’s
directory or locate specific entries

Youth on Grand Bahama Island learned valuable lessons about protecting
the environment and keeping their communities clean courtesy of the Keep
Grand Bahama Clean (KGBC) Committee, who recently concluded a
successful tour of the island's Summer Camp Programs. In keeping with
their commitment to education, conservation and preservation of the
local environment, KGBC visited several local camps to spread the
message of keeping the island clean. Using a fun and interactive puppet
show, the group assisted by its summer interns, participated in the I
Can Camp, Camp Ambrose as well as the Salvation Army Camp and is also
available for similar presentations at assemblies during the school year...

Recently, little Miss Markaylah Foster, an 8-year-old third grade
student at Hugh W. Campbell Primary, reached out to the Keep Grand
Bahama Clean (KGBC) Committee through her Grandmother, Chrystal Johnson,
and Parents, Michelle Gaitor and Marcel Foster, expressing an interest
in becoming an environmental ambassador and junior member of the KGBC
initiative.
During a specially organized courtesy meeting, little
Markaylah shared her love for the environment and some of the things
that she would like to see done in her community. “I would like to see
more garbage bins on the streets and encourage persons to stop
littering” commented Markaylah.

conducted its summer student employment program, providing Grand

The Zeta Rho Sigma chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. and
the Freeport Aquatics Club (FAC) announce their partnership to prevent
drowning and increase swim participation, with the SWIM 1922 program. On
Saturday, August 11th and August 25th, 2018, SWIM 1922 Adult Swim
Clinics will be held at the Bishop Michael Eldon High School Pool, E.
Sunrise Highway, beginning at 8:30am. The clinics are open to the public
and the cost is $10.00 per session.

Brice and Santana Dean – 2018 graduates of the Bahamas Technical and
Vocational Institute (BTVI) – are employees of DTEC Plant Services LTD
(DTEC). As a DCO Energy subsidiary, the company is responsible for
managing the maintenance and operations of the chilled water plant and
emergency backup generator that provides cooling of air conditioning
systems for the entire Baha Mar property.
