Each year, on the third Saturday in September groups of energetic students, teachers, churches civic groups’ volunteers descend upon beaches and shorelines along Grand Bahama Island’s southern coast, to take part in Ocean Conservancy International Coastal Cleanup on Saturday, September 19th, 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup is the world’s largest volunteer event of its kind. Last year, 390,000 volunteers from 76 countries and 45 states cleared six million pounds of trash from oceans and waterways and recorded every piece of trash collected. Enclosed is more information on Grand Bahama beaches where cleaning will take place.
All Grand Bahamians are encouraged to participate on any coastal area...

Grand Bahama Salvation Army adds Mobile Kitchen to fleet - Aug 29, 2009 - 2:52:01 PM
Grand
Bahama Island - The Salvation Army in Freeport has increased its readiness for
emergency disaster situations that may affect the island.
The Army, well known for its quick and
efficient response, has just added a complete mobile kitchen and serving unit
to its vehicle fleet. The unit, commonly called a DRU (Disaster Response Unit)
is a gift to Freeport by the Salvation Army’s Florida Headquarters. The Florida
Command was assisted in preparing this unit by the Headquarters in Atlanta, GA
“This vehicle will add immeasurably to the Army’s ability to assist people on
this island affected by any emergency disaster situation,” said Ben H. Bell, a
member of the Freeport Advisory Board who has seen the Salvation Army in action
in the United States as well as Grand Bahama Island

causing many businesses to close their doors, Frank Outten, the
proprietor of Frank's Ice Cream, has found sufficient success with his
current two locations in the downtown area and has opened a third at
the Port Lucaya Market-place.
During a brief ceremony yesterday at the store, Outten expressed his
thanks to God for blessing him and allowing his business to prosper
over the years.
The businessman explained that he was involved in a bad accident in
June 1998 in which his Jeep Cherokee turned over five times...

In February, at the age of ten, Candice Woon was chosen by
her school, Bishop Michael Eldon Primary in Freeport,
Grand Bahama Island
to represent the school as Primary School Student of the Year 2009. The competition is open to all of the primary
schools of The Bahamas for students in the 6th grade. In May at the award ceremonies, Candice did
well, placing 7th place Finalist over all nationally out of a total
of 114 schools participating. She
received the Medal and two trophies as well as a scholarship from BEC for high

evening, August 1st to hear
Together as One, a concert based on the theme of
emancipation by The Grand Bahama Youth Choir at the Count Basie Square,
Port Lucaya Marketplace.
This was a FREE public cultural exhibition concert titled
many local dignitaries were on hand for the show with locals and tourists alike.
The Grand Bahama Choir will also perform for the arrival of the Miss Universe Pageant contestants on August 9th.
The choir is under the direction of Kevin Tomlinson...

The downturn in the economy and low
visitor arrivals affect us all. The affect is also being felt
at the Freeport animal shelter which is swamped with animals many of
which are there as a result of economic woes. While we realize that
there are many organizations seeking funds for worthy causes please
consider that these animals have no control over their circumstances
and need our help.
Unlike the shelter in Nassau that is
funded by the Bahamas Government the Freeport shelter is dependent on
private donations. The Port Authority contributes substantially but
there is still a major shortfall in revenue to cover operating expenses
particularly for animal care...

but have they conquered the scientific stereotypes? This is a question that summer intern
Shonique Miller is hoping to help change.
Miller returned to Grand Bahama Power Company two weeks ago for her
second year as a summer intern in the Engineering department. Miller graduated in December 2008 with a
Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from North Carolina A&T State. Not content with that or placing second in
her engineering class, she took on a fellowship offered by the school so she
can obtain her Master’s Degree in Engineering...
