233rd Anniversary of the US Independence celebration held in Grand Bahama - Jul 2, 2009 - 7:15:31 PM
The United States Embassy celebrated the 233rd Anniversary
of the
Independence of the
United States of America with two celebrations; one in Freeport, Grand
Bahama on Wednesday, July 1, and the other in New Providence on July 2nd. This is the first time that the Embassy hosted an official
Independence celebration on Grand Bahama. This year’s celebration theme was
dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the birth of President Abraham
Lincoln”.
In Grand
Bahama, the 4th of July an official reception was held in the Pavillion at Our Lucaya Beach & Golf Resort.

Freeport announces that are spots still available for this year’s
Summer Camp program. There are only a few so you are encouraged to
contact The Salvation Army right away.
The camp is
FREE to the
parents of local (Grand Bahama) children ages 5-14. It is held Monday
thru Friday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
There are three camp sessions divided by ages The first camp
(ages 5-8) begins June 29, 2009 with the others beginning July 6 (ages
9-11) and the last one (ages 12-14) July 13 The camp is conducted by
Salvation Army staff along with local and overseas volunteers.

Teachers, School Board, family and friends came out to celebrate the accomplishments of
the 2009 Graduating Class of Lucaya International School on Friday, May 29th
. The Graduation ceremonies were held in Portabellos at Our Lucaya for
eleven students, most of whom are headed to colleges and universities in the US, Canada and Europe.
Led by Acting School Director of LIS, Nigel Kirkby, graduation ceremonies highlighted the unique characteristics of each graduate and gave attendees a little insight into the student’s personalities. During the exercise, awards were given out for various subjects. Teachers were quick to note that honours were not always given to the top student, but also to those who worked diligently within the subject and showed consistent interest...

Grand Bahama Island - On June 4th the Governor General Youth Award (GGYA) programme held an awards ceremony to present the Bronze and Silver Awards at the Foster B. Pestaina Centre.
The Mistress of Ceremony was Mrs. Lavender Roberts, Unit Leader, Sunland Baptist Academy. The vote of thanks was given by Ms. Denise Mortimer, GGYA National Executive Director. Special guest speaker and presenter was businessman David Mellor, who had the whole audience captivated with his expedition stories to such places as Mt. Everest. Mr. Mellor brought pictures, equipment and even the Bahamian flag he had placed on Everest's summit.
There were 66 bronze participants and 51 silver participants, from 7 different Grand Bahama schools...

Two weeks ago three sixth grade students at Lucaya International School asked their fellow schoolmates, family and the GB Community to help them collect nonperishable foods for the Grand Bahama Children’s Home.
This was all part of their "Action" to help the cause they are studying for their end of year project. Over the last two weeks the students collected canned food, drinks, pastas, etc.. Yesterday they delivered the goods to the home to Assistant Administrator Caron Smith...
