233rd Anniversary of the US Independence celebration held in Grand Bahama - Jul 2, 2009 - 7:15:31 PM

The United States Embassy celebrated the 233rd Anniversary of the Independence of the United States of America with two celebrations; one in Freeport, Grand Bahama on Wednesday, July 1, and the other in New Providence on July 2nd.  This is the first time that the Embassy hosted an official Independence celebration on Grand Bahama.  This year’s celebration theme was dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the birth of President Abraham Lincoln”. 

In Grand Bahama, the 4th of July an official reception was held in the Pavillion at Our Lucaya Beach & Golf Resort.

Freeport, Grand Bahama Island - Miss Grand Bahama, Garelle Hudson is preparing for her next pageant, the Miss Global Beauty Queen Pageant in Beijing China in July and August 2009.

Part of that preparation is to be sure she looks her best while in China for the many activities that await her in the upcoming pageant. Clothing will be a large component of how Miss Grand Bahama represents herself, and the Miss Grand Bahama Beauty Pageant Organization is please to announce and thank Bandolera, owned and operated by Ms. Prudence Martin-Gallagher for providing a wardrobe for Miss Grand Bahama.  

Bandolera has provided Miss Grand Bahama with an array of casual, smart, cocktail, and elegant fashions for her trip...

Salvation Army, Freeport has a few Spots left for Free Summer Camp - Jun 25, 2009 - 12:33:44 AM
The Salvation Army, Freeport  announces that are spots still available for this year’s Summer Camp program. There are only a few so you are encouraged to contact The Salvation Army right away.

The camp is FREE to the parents of local (Grand Bahama) children ages 5-14. It is held Monday thru Friday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.
 
There are three camp sessions divided by ages  The first camp (ages 5-8) begins June 29, 2009 with the others beginning July 6 (ages 9-11)  and the last one (ages 12-14) July 13 The camp is conducted by Salvation Army staff along with local and overseas volunteers.

Grand Bahama Island - Hundreds came out to enjoy an elegant evening of champagne, chocolate, strawberries, cheeses and summer party hits at Sabor Restaurant and Bar's Champagne Summer Party at Pelican Bay Hotel on June 12th.

This was the third in a series of free events held for patrons on Grand Bahama. Sabor Restaurant and Bar has definitely become the place to be seen!

To show support, President Ian Rolle of The Grand Bahama Port Authority, Limited attended this morning’s official opening. “The academic school year is done and these kids deserve a break.     Grand Bahama Island - Teachers, School Board, family and friends came out to celebrate the accomplishments of the 2009 Graduating Class of Lucaya International School on Friday, May 29th . The Graduation ceremonies were held in Portabellos at Our Lucaya for eleven students, most of whom are headed to colleges and universities in the US, Canada and Europe.

Led by Acting School Director of LIS, Nigel Kirkby, graduation ceremonies highlighted the unique characteristics of each graduate and gave attendees a little insight into the student’s personalities. During the exercise, awards were given out for various subjects. Teachers were quick to note that honours were not always given to the top student, but also to those who worked diligently within the subject and showed consistent interest...

In the upcoming week she plans on attending the St. Paul's Methodist College High School Graduation. The St. Paul's Administrative Luncheon (Where she will be a Guest of Honour) and the Sunland Baptist Academy Promenade where she will accompany one lucky teen on a night to remember...

Grand Bahama Island - On June 4th the Governor General Youth Award (GGYA) programme held an awards ceremony to present the Bronze and Silver Awards at the Foster B. Pestaina Centre.

The Mistress of Ceremony was Mrs. Lavender Roberts, Unit Leader, Sunland Baptist Academy.  The vote of thanks was given by Ms. Denise Mortimer, GGYA National Executive Director. Special guest speaker and presenter was businessman David Mellor, who had the whole audience captivated with his expedition stories to such places as Mt. Everest. Mr. Mellor brought pictures, equipment and even the Bahamian flag he had placed on Everest's summit.

There were 66 bronze participants and 51 silver participants, from 7 different Grand Bahama schools...

Grand Bahama Island - Two weeks ago three sixth grade students at Lucaya International School asked their fellow schoolmates, family and the GB Community to help them collect nonperishable foods for the Grand Bahama Children’s Home.  

This was all part of their "Action" to help the cause they are studying for their end of year project.   Over the last two weeks the students collected canned food, drinks, pastas, etc..  Yesterday they delivered the goods to the home to Assistant Administrator Caron Smith...

Grand Bahama Island - Barteltt Hill held their 2009 graduation ceremonies recently.  Head Boy for the school is Deandre Forbes, and Head girl is Aaliyah Chatelain.

Valedictorian for 2009 was also Head Girl Aaliyah Chatelain, and the Deputy Head girl, Asia Outten was the Salutatorian.

Grand Bahama Island - Dave Mackey, webmaster/administrator of The Bahamas Weekly presented a check to the Grand Bahama Heritage Foundation in the amount of $500 on May 27th, 2009.

The funds were raised from the Bahamas premier screening of Jeffrey Poitier's documentary Voices...  which was presented on April 25th in Freeport.

This presentation would not have been made possible without the generous support of the sponsors Ministry of Tourism, Ross University, and Pelican Bay Hotel, and all those that supported the event like Bahamian Brewery and Beverage, Film Commissioner Craig Woods, Bahamas Ambassador to Washington Cornelius A. Kristin was the person we would all like to be.   She was kind, loving, generous, and displayed many fruits of the spirit qualities. She always had a word of encouragement and could brighten your day with her beautiful smile and infectious laugh – entirely devoted to all those she held dear.

 

Her achievements during her short life were many.   She accomplished so much on any given day, one had to wonder how it was possible to fit it all in, but she had to – her time was limited.

 

 A wife, a mother, a daughter an entrepreneur, an administrator, she wrote, sang and produced her own songs, took part in stage productions, sang solos at funerals, weddings and talent shows. Her vocal genre encompassed reggae, pop, R&B, gospel, and even opera...
