Anil Antony wins Teacher of the Year Award in USA - May 18, 2010 - 9:59:25 PM

Ten years of hard work has paid off for Kerala’s Anil Antony who won the Teacher of the Year Award of the Southeastern Consortium for Minorities in Engineering (SECME) programme, the USA.

Antony, of Valiyaveettil House, Aluva, outperformed over 50 finalists to make it to the top spot. The SECME programme under the Ministry of Education, USA, selects the best teacher of the year from nominated teachers from universities, schools and colleges through a year-long selection process.

Anil has been working at Freeport, Grand Bahama district, as teacher for the last 20 years...

GBPA License Fee Waiver Attracting New Business in the International Bazaar - May 18, 2010 - 5:12:07 PM

Friday 14th May, 2010 – Freeport, Bahamas –  Retail store proprietress Gloria Russell, opened up a new store in the International Bazaar two weeks ago.  After qualifying for the ‘1st Year Free’ license fee waiver extended by The Grand Bahama Port Authority, Limited (GBPA), Russell has already applied to open 2 more stores in the Bazaar.

“In an effort to revitalize the International Bazaar, stimulate the small business sector, and encourage entrepreneurship on Grand Bahama Island, GBPA is pleased to announce that we will waive the first-year’s license fee, for all approved new license applicants with operating premises in the International Bazaar,” stated GBPA President, Ian Rolle.

According to Russell, those were the words that prompted her to act quickly to secure 2 more spaces.  “I thought the license fee waiver was a wonderful thing because through it you can actually see that the Port Authority is trying to help local residents.  The announcement made me feel good, excited and motivated all at the same time.

The Grand Bahama AIDS Awareness Committee educates people on how to stop the transmission of HIV, encourages people to respond to informed ways to people who have HIV, and helps people apply the facts about HIV to their bahaviour.  Knowing this, it’s easy to appreciate the support received from the business owners of the International Bazaar during these hard economic times...

Freeport, Bahamas – Graduating high school students, attending a recent career fair, gained firsthand knowledge from several professional presenters, including Customer Relations Manager at The Grand Bahama Port Authority, Limited (GBPA) Nicole Colebrooke.

Gathered in the Foster B. Pestaina Centre at Christ the King Anglican Church, the students received instruction under the theme ‘Get a Jump Start into Your Future’.

Colebrooke’s topic centered on the advantages of owning a business as a GBPA licensee.  Adapting her presentation to her youthful listeners, in her introduction she raised the scenario of an individual waking in the morning, getting dressed, driving to work, opening their business establishment, making deliveries and servicing their customers...

Freeport, Grand Bahama - (The Freeport News) Contestants in the upcoming Miss Grand Bahama pageant competed Saturday night in what would be the first leg of the competition that counts toward the final scores - the swimsuit and evening gown categories.

The event attracted a full house at the Treasure Bay Casino, with friends, family members and other supporters of the contestants cheering wildly for their favourites. Also in attendance was the reigning Miss Grand Bahama Nikki Severe.

"The swimsuit and evening gown portion play a very important role in the pageant. This is where the young ladies receive the points for the top five semi-finalists. Then the top five will have their platform where they will talk about some project of their choice that they will do in the community and that will bring them to the top three," explained pageant co-ordinator Glenn Davis...

Freeport , Bahamas –  The Grand Bahama Port Authority, Limited (GBPA) held a town meeting recently for the city’s licensed building contractors and interested industry professionals.

Attendees packed the Foster B. Pestaina Centre at Christ the King Anglican Church to discuss the - adoption of The Bahamas Building Code (BBC) with modifications, a revised contractors’ certification program; and introduction of a contractors’ certification committee.

Addressing the group were members of GBPA’s Building & Development Services department, including Arthur Jones, Vice President; Allison Campbell , Deputy Director; and Clint Bain, Chief Building Manager.

‘One country, one code’ was the foremost thought presented by the GBPA group.  “The GBPA Building Code was written in 1967, with an amendment in 1983.

Grand Bahama, Bahamas - This summer Sunland Lutheran School alumni will hold a second reunion in Freeport, Grand Bahama. The reunion committee is hoping to attract as many old students as they can and have launched a facebook group page and  website"www.sunlandreunion2010.com" www.sunlandreunion2010.com) to help get the word out to all alumni.

“Almost five years ago we organized our own class' reunion in Freeport and it was an absolute blast to reunite with everyone,” said Laura Haddad Reunion Coordinator, Class of 1982. “Our class was due to have the next reunion in July 2010 in Freeport, but after being asked from several alumni to combine the reunion we have decided to make it a big reunion and include the alumni from the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s.”

Currently there are over 60 persons committed to the event, some traveling from Canada, United States and as far as Europe to attend. “When our school stared in the late 60’s Freeport had many foreign students whose parents worked at Borco, Syntex, El Casino – to name a few,” noted Haddad...

Freeport, Grand Bahama - Bahamian chef Elizabeth Grant, who is a head chef at Sabor Restaurant and Bar had the opportunity to experience Iceland recently. Iceland is a European island county located in the north Atlantic Ocean just south of the Arctic Circle and has a population of around 320,000. 

Liz has been working with international chef and cookbook author, Volundur Volundarson of Iceland for almost 10 years now, and she jumped at the chance to not only experience the culture of Iceland but the cooking there as well.

Her stay in Iceland gave her the opportunity to work at Veisluturninn which is an upscale fine dining restaurant...

Freeport, Bahamas –  Staff of The Grand Bahama Port Authority, Limited (GBPA) turned out in full force on Saturday morning for the annual Atlantic Medical Insurance Fun Walk.

The popular fitness event drew hundreds of participants who rolled out of bed for the 6:30am start.  Joining them was the spirited GBPA group who were more than happy to support such a worthy cause and maintain their title of ‘the largest group to participate’ for the fourth year in a row.

Amidst the cheers of camaraderie, GBPA-Insurance Officer, Willamae Ferguson, accepted the floating trophy on the company’s behalf...

Freeport, Grand, Bahama - Millie’s Car Rental and Big G’s Plumbing are pleased to provide financial support to the restoration program of the watchable wildlife pond at the Rand Nature Centre (RNC) in Freeport.  

The pond restoration program is quickly moving forward with its goal to provide the Grand Bahama community with an oasis to view the wildlife and nature. Residents and visitors will be able to relax near the waterfall or under the gazebo and enjoy native plants, birds and butterflies around the pond.

Freeport, Bahamas - The Pilot Club of Freeport helps to steer the Bumpin Big Show Circus into town May 5th.  With official circus events beginning Thursday, April 29th with the first of two parades, "the Pilot Club is excited of the arrival of circus" stated Donna Laing-Jones, President. The Pilot Club will be recipients of part proceeds for a designated night in which they will hold a raffle to raise much needed funds for the service organization.

The first parade will commence at the YMCA at 4:00p.m on Thursday, April 29th and then merge into a parade at Royal Palm Way and Seahorse Road climaxing at The Port Lucaya Marketplace. The parades will feature such bands as the Pathfinders and Legends marching band, it will also feature the Swingers and Majestic Crusaders Junkanoo groups...

Freeport, Bahamas - On May 1st the international recording a Capella group, Naturally 7 will be performing in Grand Bahama en route to their European tour. The performance will take place at the Bishop Michael Eldon Auditorium at 7pm.

The Grand Bahama Performing Artists Society is pleased to announce that on top of what will be an unforgettable concert experience, Naturally 7 will be giving of their time on Sunday, May 2nd offering a mentor workshop to local high school students.

What is a Naturally 7 workshop? The groups' tour manager explains, "A Naturally 7 workshop is a journey behind the scenes with the band. We allow you to join us on our side of the creative process, the arranging, writing, producing, singing and imitating of instruments. Not only will we give demonstrations, but the kids will learn what, why and how we think in creating our sound. During this time we'll take the band apart and put it back together again. It's going to be a lot of fun..."
