Boaters Violating Inland Waterways Bylaws - Apr 28, 2010 - 6:21:24 PM

Freeport, Bahamas – The Building and Development Services Department of The Grand Bahama Port Authority, Limited (GBPA) wishes to advise the public, that in accordance with the Freeport (Marina and Inland Waterways) Bylaws, certain restrictions apply when using the island’s canal system.

According to Arthur Jones, Vice President of Building and Development Services for GBPA, violation of such bylaws are on the increase.  “Following legitimate complaints from residents who live along the canals regarding abuse of sea craft movements, it has become necessary to remind the public of some of the byelaws which govern the inland waterways and canals,” said Jones.

Citing safety concerns associated with such misuse, Jones explained that some boaters are speeding to the point of creating a wash or wake...

Freeport, Grand Bahama - Members are reminded of the Annual General Meeting of the Grand Bahama Chapter of Bahamas Real Estate Association which will be held on Thursday, April 29th 2010, at 12:00 p.m., at the Taino by the Sea Restaurant, Jolly Roger Drive.  Luncheon reservations are priced at $30.00 per person and will be an impressive buffet.  A cocktail social will start at 12noon with lunch being served promptly at 12:30pm.

Freeport, Bahamas - Listed among the most prevalent diseases in Grand Bahama are Hypertension, Diabetes, Heart Disease etc.   Based on the fact that these diseases usually correlate with lifestyle, The Grand Bahama Health Services will be hosting a Community Wellness Day on Saturday, April 24th, 2010.   The event will begin at 7:00 a. with a Fun Run/Walk leaving from the Rand Memorial Hospital.   After the walk the entire Grand Bahama community is invited to a Health Fair and Farmer’s Market on the grounds of the Rand Memorial Hospital, from 8:00am-1:00pm. 

The Health Fair is geared towards encouraging the Grand Bahama Community to live healthier lifestyles.  The Day is expected to be exciting as booths will be set up to educate the community.  There will be many booths such as The Cancer Association of Grand Bahama, the Lupus Association, Insurance Management, Colina Insurance, The Cancer Society, Cruzin Café Restaurant, Mr. Baker Restaurant, Butler’s Specialty Foods and many others...

Freeport, Bahamas –  The Keep Grand Bahama Committee (KGBC) observed Earth Day with a ten-minute lights off exercise on Thursday morning.  Businesses and residents on Grand Bahama were invited to join in a show of solidarity whilst conserving energy at the same time.

Along with observing lights off, all of the island’s primary schools were invited to submit Earth Day pledges on behalf of their various schools. Local radio stations cooperated with KGBC by airing the school pledges throughout the day.

HIV and AIDS is the most devastating health crisis of our time. Representing GBPA Executives, GBPA’s Director of Community Relations, Geneva Rutherford, expressed her thoughts on the issue, “Ignorance and illiteracy are major contributing factors to the spread of the disease. By increasing awareness and broadening educational avenues, time will soon reveal that we can win the war against HIV and AIDS.”

Freeport, Grand Bahama – Special Olympics was founded on the belief that people with intellectual disabilities can, with proper instruction and encouragement, learn, enjoy and benefit from participation in individual and team sports. The Grand Bahama Port Authority, Limited (GBPA) is proud of our Grand Bahama Island Athletes and lend support to the training for the upcoming 2010 National Championships, which will be held in New Providence, summer of this year.

GBPA Director of Community Relations, Geneva Rutherford, represented GBPA Executives and donated a cheque to the Special Olympics Committee of Grand Bahama in the lobby area of The Port building. “GBPA is well aware that due to the state of the economy active fundraising has been a challenge for many organizations. The Freeport News - Junior and senior Junkanooers were rewarded for their efforts earlier this year during awards ceremonies on Thursday night and Friday morning.

At the event, the prizes were distributed for the New Year's Day Senior Parade, and the City of Freeport Council's Junior Parade, which was held on January 16...

Yesterday, during the Junior Awards Presentation, Minister of Culture Charles Maynard commended the schools for their efforts and congratulated the winners.

The parade was broadcast live on ZNS and, according to the Minister, blew the country away. He challenged the schools to try to top that performance next year.

The Freeport News - The Antiquities, Monuments and Museums Cor-poration (AMMC), in collaboration with the Grand Bahama Port Authority (GBPA), officially unveiled its travelling exhibition: "Lest We Forget 'the Triumph Over Slavery'," yesterday.

The exhibit, stationed at Sir Charles Hayward Children's Library, uses narratives, artifacts and movies to explore the struggle of slaves and their triumph over captivity and is open for six weeks for public viewing.

Youth, Sports and Culture Minister Charles Maynard served as guest speaker at the ceremony, where he hailed Grand Bahama as a "trend-setting" island and expressed appreciation to the AMMC and GBPA for hosting the showcase...

Freeport, Bahamas – As part of activities related to ‘National Coastal Awareness Month’, the Ministry of Tourism and Aviation (MOTA) invited the Keep Grand Bahama Clean Committee (KGBC) to join them for special presentations to students of the western Grand Bahama Primary Schools.

Students of Bartlett Hill, Holmes Rock, Martin Town and West End Primary Schools, gathered in the Eight Mile Rock High School gymnasium to enjoy interactive presentations by Tourism and KGBC officials.

The morning’s event began with a video, ‘Under the Sea’, complete with a special appearance by popular children’s cartoon character ‘Sponge Bob Square Pants’...
