The Rotary Club of Nassau Sunrise welcomed the newly
appointed Minister of State for Legal Affairs, The Honourable Elsworth
Johnson to deliver remarks at their meeting on May 24th, 2017 at the
British Colonial Hilton. Minister Johnson’s inspiring presentation
focused on his hope for the future of the Bahamas and shared his
appreciation for the talent and potential of young Bahamians and the
need to continue to be inclusive and supportive.
The final meetings leading up to the close of our year will reiterate
the message and spirit of the Rotary Club of Nassau Sunrise and
celebrate the accomplishments of our club and its members. We were

Rotary Foundation centennial celebrated with Easter egg hunt -

The historic Collins House grounds were speckled with colourful eggs
Easter weekend as hundreds of children searched for prizes during six
egg hunts throughout the day. The Rotary Clubs of East Nassau, Nassau,
and New Providence, in partnership with JoyFM and 100Jamz, hosted an
Easter Egg Hunt and Fun Day on April 15 to celebrate the centennial of
The Rotary Foundation. Proceeds from the fun day will be donated to The
Rotary Foundation to do good in our community and the world.
Live radio remotes from JoyFm and 100Jamz carried the festive atmosphere
throughout the day. After an appearance from the Easter Bunny, the
entertainment peaked with a live performance by Faddah Fred, Bahamian
Tre, Spicy Dee, and Lil Peewee brought to us by the Exile Media Group...

Prior
to 1989 the constitution and bylaws of Rotary International stated that
Rotary club membership was for males only. However on May 4th 1989 the
US Supreme Court ruled that Rotary clubs may not exclude women from
membership on the basis of gender.
The
1989 Council on Legislation vote to admit women into Rotary clubs
worldwide remains a “watershed moment” in the history of Rotary and the
vote followed the decades-long efforts of men and women from all over
the Rotary world to allow for the admission of women into Rotary clubs...

VP of BTC North updates Sunrise Rotary, Grand Bahama -

Newley appointed Vice President of BTC North, Eldri Ferguson-Mackey,
made her first official Rotary appearance at the Sunrise club on
Wednesday morning. Greeting the members, Ferguson-Mackey brought her
entire management team to give an update on BTC restoration efforts and
supporting ’Service Above Self’ in giving back to the community.
As
this club spearheaded many recovery efforts, each member received a free
DONGLE device, which allows them to use tethering (internet access)
with out pulling from their own phone data...

Grand Bahama Science Club to include college-level students -

The Rotary Club of Lucaya and its partners have been instrumental in the
Grand Bahama Science Club now having a home base that allows for
college-level students and faculty to become engaged.
The
historic event was held on February 11th at the Bahamas Technical and
Vocational Institute’s (BTVI) campus in Freeport, Grand Bahama - thanks
to a public-private partnership with the Ministry of Education Science
and Technology, BTVI, The Bahamas Society of Engineers, The University
of the Bahamas and the Grand Bahama Chamber of Commerce...

Ambassador Joudi Shares Vision of Expo 2020 with the Rotary Club of South East Nassau -

New possibilities and exposure for The Bahamas will be
realized with the country’s participation in Expo 2020 Dubai. Last
Fall, it was announced that The Bahamas would take part in this world
fair where 180 countries are expected to showcase achievements of their
nations. Rotarians from the Rotary Club of South East Nassau heard about
the six-month Expo that ends in April 2021 where approximately 25
million visitors are expected to attend. The Bahamas is looking for
talent and participation for their pavilion and Rotarians were invited
to play a part.
With a collaborative effort between the Bahamas
Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the University of The Bahamas (UB), a
design challenge for the Bahamas pavilion for Dubai was kicked off by
presentations from 4 groups. They comprised of students from the

Rotaract Club of East Nassau successfully holds its 5th Annual Entrepreneurship Panel -

On 19 January, 2017, The Rotaract Club of East Nassau (RCEN) hosted its
Fifth Annual Entrepreneurship Panel Discussion, under the theme
“Entrepreneurship: The Leap of Faith!” at The Nassau Yacht Club. The
event was moderated by Patrice “Puppy” Treco Robinson, Founder of
Pupstar Entertainment and a proud Past President of RCEN. Patrice
“Puppy” Robinson engaged the nearly two hundred attendees in a thought
provoking discussion with panelists on the topics discussed.
This

Rotary Clubs of The Bahamas Donates to the One Eleuthera Foundation -

Nassau, Bahamas – Continuing its efforts to support family island
communities in combating breast cancer, the Rotary Clubs of The Bahamas
(RCOB) presented a cheque of $5,000 to the One Eleuthera Foundation in
support of their cancer screening initiative in Eleuthera.
Assistant
Governor Tim Ingraham and Assistant Governor Mario Smith made the
presentation to Shaun Ingraham, CEO of the One Eleuthera Foundation. Mr.
Ingraham thanked Rotary Clubs of The Bahamas for their support and
donation which will assist with the organisation’s cancer screening and
imaging program. Ingraham said the purpose of the Eleuthera Imaging
Program is to provide mammogram and ultrasound services on the island.

International support following international disaster
Nassau, The Bahamas (October 10, 2016) — Rotarians around the globe
raise their glasses each week and toast to "Rotary around the world."
The power of this statement is even more evident during times of
disasters. Less than 24 hours after Hurricane Matthew passed over
Nassau, capital of The Bahamas, Rotarians in The Cayman Islands were
collecting supplies for The Bahamas. Having experienced devastating
hurricanes themselves, without a second thought Caymanians organized
drop locations for donations. Past President of the Rotary Club of
Central Cayman Islands Al Thompson pleaded, "Think about what you needed
after hurricane Ivan. Everything right? Our neighbors to the north are
in the same situation and it's now our turn to become the givers." The
supplies were loaded on a Bahamasair jet leaving Friday afternoon back
to Nassau from Cayman where the planes rode out the storm safe from
harm...

NASSAU, The Bahamas – Chairman of Public Hospitals Authority (PHA) Board
of Directors, the Hon. Frank E. Smith said on Tuesday that the donation
of ultrasound and electrotherapy equipment from Rotary Club of
South-East Nassau to PHA’s Rehab Services was “timely.”

pointed out that, like public health services across the country, the
Rehabilitation Services Department faces demand from persons with
physical injuries, but there is as an increasing number of patients
requiring the intervention of physiotherapists, occupational therapists...

Citi & Rotary Partner for Back-To-School Jamboree -

Nassau, Bahamas - Citi Bahamas was pleased to be the Event Co-Sponsor
for The Rotary Club of West Nassau’s 2nd Annual Back-to-School Jamboree,
for the community of Gambier Village, this past Saturday, September 3,
2016. Through this initiative, both organizations together helped
approximately 150 children with their back-to-school preparation for the
upcoming school year.
Citi and the Rotary Club of West Nassau partnered to provide, a
“back-to-school kit” which included, a new backpack, composition books,
pens, pencils and other school supplies. At the event, the young boys
also received fresh haircuts, and all of the children got free health
and dental screenings...

Cleaning the Fox Hill Community One Broom and One Rotarian At A Time -

Nassau, The Bahamas — Last Saturday residents in Fox
Hill woke to news traveling through the streets to "come to the court
for free food and brooms." Men, women, families, and children came to
the Fox Hill basketball court and were greeted by Rotarians from The
Rotary Club of East Nassau (RCEN).
RCEN had a large dumpster
staged next to the courts available to residents who needed to clean out
their yard. Hot breakfast was distributed to more than 200 people as
well as 150 brooms, mops, buckets, and cleaning liquid. Once the
cleaning was complete the more energetic Rotarians had some fun on the
courts playing ball...

98-Year Old Rotarian and Olympian Sir Durward Knowles Celebrates 40th Anniversary of Club’s Formation -

Nassau, Bahamas – At 98 years old, Sir Durward Knowles was not going to
miss celebrating the anniversary of the Rotary Club he helped establish
40 years ago on July 19, 1976. When new clubs are established, Rotary
International grants them their charter.
On Wednesday, July 20,
2016, Sir Durward was present at the Rotary Club of South East Nassau’s
weekly meeting, joining charter member and past president (PP) F. Denny
Curry as well as Judy Reiach, the daughter of the club’s charter
president, the late Edwin Deal. Also recognized were the club’s long
serving Rotarians Ralph Barnett who joined in 1982 and PP and past
assistant district governor, Roger Kelty who joined 7 months after the
club’s charter...

Nassau, Bahamas — The Membership and Board of the Rotary Club of East
Nassau is bursting with pride to have two of their members win Bahamian
Icon Awards. Out of hundreds of nominations for the fourth annual
Bahamian Icon Awards, RCEN member Barry Rassin, Trustee of the Rotary
Foundation, won the award for Commerce, while Jamaal Rolle won the award
for Fine Arts.
“All of us at the Club are so proud of both
Barry and Jamaal for their wins this year”, said Diane de Cardenas,
President of the Rotary Club of East Nassau for the 2016-2017 Rotary
year. “Not only do they have the pride of being nominated in their

Rotarian volunteers treated to a visit with retired tourism pioneer -

Nassau, Bahamas - Pat's Senior Citizen Home on Soldier Road, Nassau,
is more than a retirement house for the elderly. Mrs. Patricia Moxey,
who runs the home for a number of elderly Bahamians, has created a
loving home environment for the twenty-two full time residents in her
professionally equipped home for seniors.
When the Rotary Club of
East Nassau (RCEN) arrived at the home last Saturday they expected to
simply make a donation of food, see to a handful of repairs, and to
visit with the Residents. What the Rotarians didn't expect was to meet
Harold Eugene "Gene" Gibbs, a pioneer in the Bahamian tourism industry
whose start began in 1973 when he was appointed Area Manager of the
Bahamas Islands Tourist Office in Boston, MA...
