Hurricane Matthew caused widespread damage on North Andros, Grand Bahama and New Providence last week, but had relatively little destructive impact on the country’s national parks.

The Bahamas National Trust (BNT) had recently moved its administrative offices from the Retreat on Village Road to new premises on East Bay Street.

The Retreat garden is being developed to welcome more visitors, and will continue to be the top venue for BNT events and educational programmes...

Nassau, The Bahamas (October 10, 2016) — Rotarians around the globe raise their glasses each week and toast to "Rotary around the world." The power of this statement is even more evident during times of disasters. Less than 24 hours after Hurricane Matthew passed over Nassau, capital of The Bahamas, Rotarians in The Cayman Islands were collecting supplies for The Bahamas. Having experienced devastating hurricanes themselves, without a second thought Caymanians organized drop locations for donations. Past President of the Rotary Club of Central Cayman Islands Al Thompson pleaded, "Think about what you needed after hurricane Ivan. Everything right? Our neighbors to the north are in the same situation and it's now our turn to become the givers." The supplies were loaded on a Bahamasair jet leaving Friday afternoon back to Nassau from Cayman where the planes rode out the storm safe from harm...

Envisioned more than 40 years ago, the University’s official Charter Day will be November 10th, 2016. However, outside of the formal events that are being planned to commemorate its establishment, critical capacity development work is underway to place the goal of higher education within the reach of Bahamians...

NASSAU, The Bahamas – Chairman of Public Hospitals Authority (PHA) Board of Directors, the Hon. Frank E. Smith said on Tuesday that the donation of ultrasound and electrotherapy equipment from Rotary Club of South-East Nassau to PHA’s Rehab Services was “timely.”

Nassau, Bahamas - Citi Bahamas was pleased to be the Event Co-Sponsor for The Rotary Club of West Nassau’s 2nd Annual Back-to-School Jamboree, for the community of Gambier Village, this past Saturday, September 3, 2016. Through this initiative, both organizations together helped approximately 150 children with their back-to-school preparation for the upcoming school year.

Citi and the Rotary Club of West Nassau partnered to provide, a “back-to-school kit” which included, a new backpack, composition books, pens, pencils and other school supplies. At the event, the young boys also received fresh haircuts, and all of the children got free health and dental screenings...

Fifteen students from Family Islands impacted by hurricane Joaquin have been granted scholarships to attend The Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institution, courtesy of the Rebuild Bahamas Hurricane Relief program.

The Bahamas Chamber of Commerce and Employers Confederation (BCCEC) in partnership with Rotary clubs of The Bahamas recently awarded each of the 15 students with $1,000 scholarships. The recipients represent Long Island Acklins, Crooked Island, Inagua and San Salvador, with eight hailing from Long Island alone...

Nassau, The Bahamas — Last Saturday residents in Fox Hill woke to news traveling through the streets to "come to the court for free food and brooms." Men, women, families, and children came to the Fox Hill basketball court and were greeted by Rotarians from The Rotary Club of East Nassau (RCEN).

RCEN had a large dumpster staged next to the courts available to residents who needed to clean out their yard. Hot breakfast was distributed to more than 200 people as well as 150 brooms, mops, buckets, and cleaning liquid. Once the cleaning was complete the more energetic Rotarians had some fun on the courts playing ball...

Three College of The Bahamas students - Rose Charles, Brendan Toote, and Antonette Hudson - were selected as interns from 15 applicants by the Leon Levy Native Plant Preserve on Eleuthera this summer.

They studied the natural history of the area over seven weeks under the guidance of Dr. Ethan Freid, the Preserve’s botanist. Dr Freid is a former lecturer at the College of the Bahamas.

The internship programme provides students with field experience that can lead to future employment. This is the third year that internships have been offered by the Preserve, which is operated by the Bahamas National Trust...

Nassau, Bahamas – At 98 years old, Sir Durward Knowles was not going to miss celebrating the anniversary of the Rotary Club he helped establish 40 years ago on July 19, 1976. When new clubs are established, Rotary International grants them their charter.

On Wednesday, July 20, 2016, Sir Durward was present at the Rotary Club of South East Nassau’s weekly meeting, joining charter member and past president (PP) F. Denny Curry as well as Judy Reiach, the daughter of the club’s charter president, the late Edwin Deal. Also recognized were the club’s long serving Rotarians Ralph Barnett who joined in 1982 and PP and past assistant district governor, Roger Kelty who joined 7 months after the club’s charter...

Mrs. Patricia Moxey, who runs the home for a number of elderly Bahamians, has created a loving home environment for the twenty-two full time residents in her professionally equipped home for seniors.

Andros, Bahamas - Forty Bahamian teenagers from nine islands enjoyed six days of ecological camping on Andros recently, under the guidance of the Bahamas National Trust.

More than 200 young people have taken part in the BNT’s summer Eco Camp programme, which has been running for the past seven years.

The high schoolers stay partly at a wilderness campsite in the heart of Blue Hole National Park. The campsite is a three-mile hike from their home base at the Forfar Field Station near Blanket Sound...

Nassau, The Bahamas - “Be A Gift To The World” was the Rotary International theme for 2015-2016, and it was successfully represented by the Rotary Club of South East Nassau (RCSEN), resulting with a gold award from Rotary International and a platinum award from Rotary District 7020. The club’s Early Act group at Columbus Primary were also winners for a “best song and video” about “Bullying.”

Every year towards the end of June or early July, Rotary clubs around the world install new presidents at a changeover event. The RCSEN recently held theirs on July 7, 2016 where outgoing president, Dr. Bridgette Rolle presented awards and pinned incoming president, Lillian Russell, a lawyer and financial services professional...
