This final leg of 50 years of tourism is married to tourism week, where there will be a variety of initiatives taking place through out the islands.

Grand Bahama Island kicked off its tourism awareness initiatives on Friday, January 16th with the rest of the country with the 16 island wedding promotion. Our couple from Ohio wed at sanctuary bay to the backdrop of dolphins.

We begin this week of awareness by educating, celebrating and serving the industry and community at large and most importantly, our team will worship together and give thanks with our industry partners and Cacique finalists, on Sunday, February 1st...

Bahamian Slam Jam aired both in The Bahamas and in South Florida via ZNS3.

Sir Jack said of life in Freeport in the early days; “I came here in 1956, a year after the agreement (HBCA) had been signed and of course there was nothing here. We all lived in quonset huts, barracks…very primitive. There were no roads there was no television…

WASHINGTON - The Inaugural Ceremony for U.S. President BarackObama took place today on Capitol Hill as hundreds of thousands looked on. This being the 57th inauguration of a US President.

Obama was sworn in after his Vice President Joe Biden was sworn in. Musical performances were made by the Brooklyn Choir, James Taylor, Kelly Clarkson and Beyance.

Freeport, Grand Bahama Island, Bahamas - (This article is a re-posting of a feature in November 2009 in memory of the late Hon Charles Maynard) The Bahamas Weekly News Team had the opportunity to attend the opening night gala;  "A Question of Faith: The Journey of Freetown," an historical perspective told through fibre art and an exhibition held November 12th at the Gloria Banks Galleria at the Rand Nature Centre. The exhibit is open to the public and on display for a month.

Freeport, Bahamas - Russian adventurer, Sergei Morozov who has been in Grand Bahama for over a month during his journey around the world. Sergei traveled from Bermuda to Grand Bahama, but his trip began from Halifax, Canada on the 5th of December 2011. He is preparing to next 'row around the world' and break a world rowing record. "The leg between Halifax and Bermuda was my hardest part of my trip..." he explains with very bad conditions causing him to fear for his life.

While in Grand Bahama Morozov has his 35 foot Hikari sailboat, "Dreamaker" docked at the Port Lucaya Marina, thanks to Preben Olesen and the Grand Bahama Yacht Club.  His next stop is the Panama Canal

The Bahamas is home to several species of iguanas, but some are doing better than others. In an effort to help the San Salvador iguana population, Seacology and CIBC FirstCaribbean Bank teamed up to fund the San Salvador Iguana Conservation Centre. The Centre is located at Gerace Research Center, and overseen by Professor William Hayes of Loma Linda University. Local conservation organization San Salvador’s Living Jewels is involved with education efforts and raising awareness of the importance of habitat conservation to the iguana’s future.

MTV Buzzworthy calls her "the next Rihanna"

The last time we heard from young Angelique Sabrina, Bahamian singer/songwriter who is signed to White Ocean Entertainment, she was announcing her contest to attract dancers for her official "Pull Up" video production. The new dance "Pull Up" was coined by 14 year old Angelique herself and the official video seen here includes the submission winners to the “Pull Up” contest, Dale Sweeting’s and Raquel de Cardenas’ who were chosen by the directors and can be seen at 1:13 and 1:54 minutes in the video respectively.

Just this past week the much-anticipated new video premiered on MTV Buzzworthy who are calling her the next Rhianna and gave her rave reviews...

Freeport, Grand Bahama Island - The Bahamas Weekly is pleased to present herewith an engaging  interview with Grand Bahama attorney-at-law, Maurice Glinton as he discusses the Hawksbill Creek Agreement signed August 1st, 1955; the agreement  has a 99-year lifespan that expires in 2054. The Hawksbill Creek Agreement was made between the Government of the Bahamas and Mr Wallace Groves to establish a city and free trade zone on Grand Bahama Island

Glinton also presents background information on Freeport Power, and how it operated under the umbrella of the Port Authority. "Only the Port Authority had the right to construct and operate utilities. The electricity which was produced, all with duty-free imported fuels, was confined for usage in the Port area, nowhere else. It was not supposed to be a profit centre."

In the style of a college professor, Minister Laing succinctly explains in layman's terms the ABCs of the Bahamian parliamentary system of government.

Positions like Prime Minister, Minister of State; Permanent Secretary, Minister, MP and Senator are clearly expounded upon along with their respective roles within the hierarchy of the Westminster style of government. Additionally, the minister defines how the cabinet is constructed and the step-by-step processes leading up to the dissolution of Parliament on up to general election.

This video could easily be named: "The ABCs of Bahamian Governmental Structure", “Bahamas Parliamentary System 101" or "Bahamian Government Made Simple."...

Freeport, Grand Bahama Island - Chamber musicians hosted by The Grand Bahama Performing Arts Society inspire youth of Grand Bahama through their music workshops held at the Bishop Michael Eldon Auditorium Friday, January 20th, 2011.

Tannis Gibson on piano, Janna Lower, violinist; Mark Tanner, cellist; and guest flutist, Judith Pearce provided a free mini concert and workshop for two attentive and animated groups of students from a variety of different schools on the island. It is estimated that between both sessions the group attracted almost 800 students.
