A hodgepodge of ideas -
Dec 17, 2006 - 6:35:44 PM
Ideas for this column come from everyday ordinary occurrences in my life or life around me.
In the new year, the column will continue to focus on some of the themes that dominated each week. However, I recently got a request that perhaps this column should focus on some issues dealing specifically with men.

Begin at Your Beginning -
Dec 9, 2006 - 9:16:41 PM
The Book of Genesis in the Christian Bible begins with these words: “In the beginning, when God created the universe…” The Gospel according to John begins: “In the beginning the Word already existed…” (Good News Bible 1992).
So, where do I begin if I don’t know where the beginning actually begins? It sounds like a question for a philosophy class or the question asked of some really wise guy looking to get out of something. Whatever the reason for the question, the question that comes to mind is whether or not I need to know where the beginning of something is in order to begin.

Do the right thing -
Dec 7, 2006 - 4:22:38 PM
Do unto to others as we would want them to do unto us is a virtue that many of us have been taught, but struggle to achieve. My very wise, but now deceased professor, Sr. John of
Carmel, once told me that we can only call ourselves good when we have been tempted and not fallen into temptation.
I had the great fortune this past week to have met someone who had the opportunity to choose to do the right thing.

He is only now having those life experiences that will afford him the opportunity to choose to do what is fair and just.
And the story goes…

Give me sour tamarinds anyday -

Whenever you turn on the television today you will find Americans fawning over
Hollywood celebrities to the point where they make them appear almost “Saviour-like.”
They have photographers “paparazzi” who stalk such people to get a picture that the public is craving to view.
But here in The Bahamas we don’t fawn over movie stars or rock stars.
We would give the obligatory greeting when required but there will not be a screaming throng of people yearning to catch a glimpse at any celebrity.

Pass interference -
Nov 27, 2006 - 6:24:00 PM
In American football there is a call that officials often make on the field; it is called “pass interference.”
This call is made when there is interference with a forward pass thrown from behind the line of scrimmage.
The penalty for defensive pass interference is an automatic first down at the spot of the foul.
The penalty for offensive pass interference is ten yards from the previous spot (

The option to choose -
Nov 17, 2006 - 3:38:10 PM
I have heard people say that persons “who work for themselves are so lucky.” Such individuals would opine that these persons are “so free” and can “do whatever they want.” Of course anyone who works for him/herself knows that this is very far from the truth.
