Grand Bahama Rotarian in Australia to help smash two world records - May 30, 2014 - 3:09:41 PM

Resident of Grand Bahama Island, Rotarian James Sarles, a member of Rotary Club of G.B. Sunrise is in Sydney, Australia taking part in the Rotary International Convention. As part of that convention, the entire group participated in a historic event to raise  awareness on polio, while breaking two world records. 

"I am excited to be part of history when we smashed two world records to raise funds and awareness about polio eradication." New records were broken on the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge when Sarles climbed the bridge with 340 Rotarians from around the world and waived 278 flags. It was covered on local and international news.

"We raised funds to immunize about 240,000 children against polio, which is a disease without a cure."

Grand Bahama's Beacon School Receives $200,000 Playground - May 23, 2014 - 1:15:08 PM

Freeport, Bahamas - At a cost of approximately $200,000, the Beacon School of Grand Bahama received an exterior refurbishment, new playground and garden this month thanks to the Rotary Club of Lucaya, under the presidency of  Billy Jane Ferguson. The Beacon School educates special needs students from across the island of Grand Bahama.  The playground was dedicated to the late Steven Dillet, Former Rotary Club of Lucaya president. The sole benefactor of the project was Grand Bahama resident and Rotarian Karen Clarke, President / CEO of Thayers Natural Remedies.

A dedication ceremony took place on the school grounds on May 18th with the Minister of Education, Science & Technology, Jerome Fitzgerald; Minister of Grand Bahama, Michael Darville; Senator Tanysha Tynes; Loretta Butler Turner, Deputy head of the FNM (loyal opposition) and Member of Parliament representing Long Island; Peter Turnquest MP East Grand Bahama;  Neko Grant, MP Central Bahamas; other government and civic dignitaries; school officials, students and families;  and Rotarians

Rotary of GB Sunrise hosts Cigar Nights benefitting Columbus House Big Brother/Big Sister Youth Mentoring - May 23, 2014 - 9:43:10 AM

Freeport, Grand Bahama - Over 300 people turned out Saturday evening, May 17, 2014 and had a fabulous time at a vintage Havana-themed “Cigar Nights” event at Pelican Bay Hotel’s Canal House to support Rotary of GB Sunrise’s youth mentoring program, the Safe Swim program, and Cat’s Eye road reflector work.

Latin music was provided by a band featuring Steve Persaud, Clarence Green, Larry Lewis, and Marina Gottlieb Sarles, together with a special performance by the teens at Columbus House who have been taking music lessons as part of the ongoing youth mentoring in the Big Brother/Big Sister program. The music added festive notes to the party, which also included top prizes donated by the community and auctioned off “Chinese style” —which gives raffle ticket buyers a chance to choose which prizes they’re interested in winning via how they distribute their tickets.

FREEPORT, Bahamas - It was a standing ovation and generous donations for the talented young performers in the Grand Bahama Youth Choir as they performed to a packed house during the closing banquet of the Rotary Multi-District Conference at the Grand Lucayan Resort on Saturday night.

Over 300 Rotary Club members and guests from Florida – as far away as Sarasota to Key West – along with some 60 local Grand Bahamians were vocal in their support as choir leader Kevin G. Tomlinson took the youngsters through their paces.

Following stirring renditions of both the American and Bahamian national anthems the group then cranked up the fun and had everyone on their feet and dancing to “Shake it up, Shake it up” and a medley of...

Freeport, Grand Bahama – The island of Grand Bahama was buzzing with community-minded visitors May 1-4 as over 300 Rotary Club members from across Florida came together with the four Rotary Clubs on Grand Bahama for their annual District Conference.

“All in all this conference was an overwhelming success; our Florida counterparts were overwhelmed with the hospitality shown to them by their Bahamian Rotary hosts,” said Mike Stafford, Assistant Rotary District Governor for District 6990/Grand Bahama and conference chair.

NASSAU, The Bahamas  –   This past weekend, the Rotary and Rotaract Clubs of East Nassau played in their annual softball match in a show of good sportsmanship and to raise funds for the Rotary Foundation. Rotaract, whose members are thirty years old and younger, handily won the game, beating the older Rotarians by 15 runs after six innings.

“We really play the game to have fun. In the end, we raise funds for the Rotary Foundation and it’s the community that wins,” said Philip Cumming, President of the Rotary Club of East Nassau.  The game raised $500 for the Rotary Foundation...

Nassau, Bahamas - Top students from 18 public and private Bahamian schools recently took part in the 17th Annual Model United Nations Session at the Breezes Resort on Cable Beach.

The session was sponsored by the Rotary Clubs of The Bahamas and organized in conjunction with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It has been a yearly event since 1997. This year more than 70 students participated from 11 family island schools and seven New Providence schools. Representatives from the Chinese, American and Cuban embassies also attended...

Freeport, Grand Bahama -  At about 6:10pm on Saturday 18th January 2014 ( one of the coldest nights this year ), a visiting American couple on their honeymoon, were driving their rental car west along East Sunrise Highway, returning to Freeport from a visit to East End, Grand Bahama, when their vehicle hit a pothole in the road, resulting in the left front tyre blowing out.

Nassau, Bahamas - The Rotary Club of New Providence and Rotary International teamed up with the Camperdown Stables to present the 11th Annual Horse Show this weekend.  The event, in aid of community projects, gave youngsters who have been practicing their equestrian skills to strut their stuff with their beloved animals and compete for ribbons.  

Rotarians came out in strong numbers to support the event, which is not just a horse show, but a family fun day as well.  Current President William Wilson said it is a great response and outpouring from the community - all for a charitable cause...

Nassau, Bahamas - Court of Appeal Justice, K. Neville Adderley took members of the Rotary Club of South East Nassau (RCSEN) through the ins and outs of the highest court residing in The Bahamas.
 
It's a rare occurrence for justices, particularly Court of Appeal judges, to speak in public settings.
 
Justice Adderley's 30-minute presentation at East Villa Restaurant Wednesday focused on the function of the Court of Appeal, how decisions are made in that court, and appeals emanating from those decisions.

Nassau, The Bahamas - Melissa Major & Megan Trottier of the Bahamas Breast Cancer Initiative Foundation recently spoke to the members of the Rotary Club of East Nassau (RCEN) to thank the club for its $5,000 donation to the Foundation. Research in The Bahamas shows that, compared to a six percent worldwide average, 23 percent of Bahamian women test positive for the BRCA gene, a hereditary gene connected to incidences of cancer. The donation was used to purchase 500 BRCA gene testing kits. To date, around 2,000 women have been tested, furthering the research into the cause of the relatively high rate of the BRCA gene...

Nassau, The Bahamas - On January 25th, the Rotary Club of East Nassau (RCEN), one of the oldest Rotary Clubs in The Bahamas, hosted it's second annual Burns Supper to celebrate the life and work of Scottish poet Robert Burns and to enjoy traditional culture and cuisine including Scottish bagpipes and haggis as well as a whisky tasting featuring a fine variety of single malts.

The highly anticipated event also raises funds for the East Nassau Rotary Club Foundation which was formed in 1995 and currently provides partial scholarships for 10 Bahamian students to continue their education both at home and abroad...

Lost Boys of Sudan writer to speak in The Bahamas - Nov 13, 2013 - 5:38:51 PM

In 1987, when Alephonsion was seven years old, his village in Southern Sudan was attacked by government troops. To avoid capture he ran into the night with many other young boys. Without food, water, shoes or parents, he crossed a 1000 miles of lion and crocodile infested territory. After five years of fleeing war, starvation and wild animals, he reached Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya and began his education. In 2001 the U.S. Government welcomed Alephonsion as one of the Lost Boys of Sudan.
