5 Must-Have Fall Accessories - Oct 27, 2010 - 1:33:42 AM

Fall-Must-Have-Accessories-SM.jpg
Ah fall. It’s amazing how subtly cooler days and breezy nights instantly make you want to shake up your wardrobe. Even little changes make a big statement. For a quick wardrobe update, accessories are the way to go. Check out these five must have accessories for fall.

Hosiery : We’re not talking about your mother’s pantyhose. Hosiery trends have come a long way in recent years. Show off your shapely legs without revealing too much skin in a refined pair of opaque tights. Deep jewel tones like plum and blue are fall favorites, look great on many complexions and are still refined enough to be worn in corporate settings...

Boot Camp - Oct 20, 2010 - 9:32:49 PM

BOOT-ANIM.gif
Very few things make my fashion obsessed heart beat faster than a killer pair of boots. Alas, since I moved from the sidewalks of New York City to the sandy shores of Nassau, Bahamas my boot wearing days seem to be all but over.

However one of the most synergistic mergers in fashion history is that of shoe and boot – creating the bootie, a chic alternative without the bulk warmth of traditional boots.

Whether you’re looking for a pair to wear at the office or a spicy pair for nights out on the town, there are lots of options to keep you fashionable and comfortable. From trendy to retro, sexy to classic – there is a style to suit every taste and every look...

Go Green: Eco-friendly Fashion - Oct 13, 2010 - 1:24:29 PM

small-animation_12.gif
You pick up the organic carrots instead of the regular, turn off the lights when you leave the room and even drive a small, eco-friendly car - but do you think green when it comes to your wardrobe?

The benefits of eating organic foods and thinking green within your home are easy to appreciate. Eating foods grown without harmful pesticides and synthetic fertilizers directly benefits the way you feel and your overall health; while adopting environmentally sound habits within the home can save you lots of money over time. However, thinking organically when it comes to dressing your body is just as important for the environment...

The Runway to Fashion Week - Oct 4, 2010 - 2:52:25 PM

TTF-ANIM.gif
New York Fashion Week has Fashion’s Night Out and Islands of the World Fashion Week (IWFW) created the Runway to Fashion Week - a designer showcase for local novice designers to kick off the IWFW festivities. On Sunday evening, the Runway to fashion Week was held at Mario’s Bowling Palace with a packed house of fashion enthusiasts present to witness the show.

I was honored to be selected as a judge along with textile and fashion designer Pamela Burnside and fashion designer Percy Wallace.

Dubbed the Bahamas’ “Project Runway,” 5 novice local designers participated in this inaugural event. The designers vied for two amazing prizes...

Here Comes The Bride: Fall Wedding Dress Trends‏ - Sep 29, 2010 - 11:36:23 PM

ANIMATION-SMALL_3.gif
I’ll admit, I’m terrified of marriage. My closest female friends are either just as terrified as I am or consummate scholars who will probably be studying well into their thirties which we all believe will prevent those oh-so-important nuptials from taking place. Our male friends often joke that we’ll be spinsters in our later years - heaven forbid.

However, lately marriage has been consuming my mind. My closest friends may be running from commitment like the plague, but all of my other friends are jumping in wholesale. Add to that my current obsession with the television shows “Say Yes to the Dress” and “Four Weddings,” I’m convinced everyone is getting married...

Get Drafted into the Military Trend - Sep 22, 2010 - 8:57:42 AM

Military-Inspired-ANIM.gif
Atten-HUT! Whether your fashion sense is best described as girly girl or you prefer looks that are hard as nails, it’s difficult not to drool over the military inspired apparel and accessories filling stores this fall.

With frothy, ultra feminine looks dominating spring and dainty florals peeking their heads into many fall looks, the military trend is a great way to temper all that sweet with a little edge.

To avoid looking like you just got your marching papers, opt for sleek, tailored military inspired pieces and wear them in moderation, using one military inspired piece as the focal point of your look. Keep in mind that chic combat style isn’t limited to apparel - you can add interest to your everyday fall favorites with military inspired accessories as well...

Finding the Perfect Pair of Sunglasses - Sep 13, 2010 - 7:01:56 AM

SunglassesSM.jpg
Fashion week is in full swing in NYC. While I’m wrapping my head around next year’s spring fashions, my mind is equally consumed with purchasing a new pair of sunglasses. The options seem endless - classic aviators, vintage inspired over-sized square frames, ever popular wayfarers, or vampy cat eye frames.

I am a creature of habit. Once I find something I like I tend to hold it tight for as long as possible, and this holds true for my Ray-Ban white on black 2140 wayfarers that I bought several years ago. Since I bought them, I haven’t spent a dime on a new pair of sunglasses, and after several summers of faithful service, I am yearning for a more sophisticated and versatile pair of sunnies for the fall season...

Fall Fashion Staples - Sep 2, 2010 - 11:14:15 PM

FALLanim.gif
Sure, it’s fun to pepper in a few trendy pieces into your seasonal wardrobe, but a wardrobe that’s really worth its weight in gold is filled with quality, classic pieces that remain in fashion year after year. These are your wardrobe staples. Here are 4 that will prove invaluable for the upcoming fall months.

Silk Blouse; Shift Dress; Cardigan; and a Carry-all Tote.

A feminine, silk or silk chiffon blouse is a wardrobe staple that can work wonderfully all year round, but is a real workhorse when the weather cools down a bit. A great collared version with long sleeves and a button front in a flattering but not overly frilly print will bring you years of wear...

The Glamorous Fifties - Aug 23, 2010 - 10:26:54 AM

50sANIM.gif
The fashion of the 1950’s is back for fall, hearkening the glamour of fashion icons including Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly and Brigitte Bardot. Though your lifestyle may in no way mirror those of the iconic beauties of the 1950s, bringing in a little of the era through your fashion can make you feel glamourous in your own right as you go through your day!

The key to being chic is knowing what silhouettes and colors work for you and staying true to your own style rather than jumping all over every trend that gains momentum in the fashion world. How can you channel the 1950s in your wardrobe without looking like you’re in full on costume? By interpreting the silhouettes, patterns and accessories that were popular during the era into looks that work for your body and lifestyle.

One of the most popular and influential designers during the 1950’s was Christian Dior and his “New Look...”

Dress to Frill - Aug 16, 2010 - 3:20:57 PM
FRILLanim_1.gif
Feminine, demure and oh so sexy, lace is designers’ current fabric of choice. This age old textile has stood the test of time, remaining as relevant in today’s fashion scene as it was in centuries past. Designer labels from Givenchy to Alexander McQueen have all incorporated lace in their upcoming Cruise 2011 collections, making it a hot trend for not only this fall but into next year as well.

However if you’ve never slipped on a lace piece, the thought of wearing a fabric so inherently boudoir may seem daunting.

Never fear, lace is a classic look and when done right you can be assured you won’t look like a walking doily.

When wearing lace stick to the rule “less is more.” One lace piece is sufficient...

Walking Tall - Aug 11, 2010 - 1:24:55 PM

walking-in-heelsSM.jpg
I love the way wearing high heels makes me feel. Slimmer legs, sultry calves and a visibly flatter stomach are just a few of the benefits of wearing sky high heels.

Added to that, I have always wanted to be taller, so slipping on a pair of high heels is the quickest fashion fix for women like myself who want to pump up their height several inches in a flash.

The downside is the discomfort that comes with teetering atop 4 inch heels for hours a day, almost everyday. Unless you are like my mother who has mastered the art of wearing heels everyday, so much so that she only feels foot and back discomfort in flats, then this little column is for you...

Island Gems – Handmade Jewelry - Jul 26, 2010 - 4:36:22 PM

SS.gif
This weekend I escaped. I threw a few lightweight dresses and cut off jeans into a bag and ran away to what is undeniably one of my favorite islands in The Bahamas, actually perhaps on this planet  - Eleuthera.

With two Eleuthera experts as my unofficial guides, one of the first stops was Island Made - a tiny souvenir shop off of Queen’s Highway in Gregory Town. Dried coconuts brightly painted to depict smiling faces, reams of Androsia, and homemade preserves are just a few of the Bahamian made goodies to be discovered in this little gem of a store.

I browsed the house wares and homemade gourmet delights but like a true fashion junkie, what really caught my eye was the jewelry...

Underneath It All - Jul 7, 2010 - 1:52:11 PM

SM-Image-from-MarieClaire.com.jpg
The most important part of building a house is ensuring you lay a solid foundation Just the same, when building a great outfit, you have to start with proper fitting foundation pieces - your underwear.

Wearing ill-fitting and unflattering undergarments is a cardinal sin in the fashion world. Laying the ground work for a stellar outfit starts with choosing the right basic essentials, your underwear.

The color and texture of your underwear directly affect how your clothes look to the world. The most surefire way to ensure your undies are not visible beneath your clothing is to wear a color that is as close to your skin tone as possible...

Dressing for the Day of Love - Feb 10, 2010 - 8:58:54 AM

St. Valentine’s Day is upon us. For a single sister not planning to even think about dressing up for Valentines day, karma dealt me a hand of jokers with more ladies than I can count requesting personal shopping for dia del amor. The questions came rolling in – do I wear red or white, sexy or classy, cleavage or legs, or both?

For all those still at a loss for what special little number to pull out for the day, here’s a little guidance based on the type of night you are your beau are planning.

The Casual Date - Leave the skinny jeans, spaghetti strap tank and flip flops at home. Even if you and your beau are keeping it low key a-la a movie or drinks at a casual bar, show him a little love by putting a little extra thought into your look...

Dress Codes Decoded - Dec 18, 2009 - 7:16:24 AM
The holiday season is here which means parties galore. Whether you have a ball to attend or a special party in the backyard, chances are the invitation stipulates some form of dress. From ‘Festive’ to ‘Creative Black Tie,’ here are some tips to help you decode those sometimes confusing dress codes this season.

A ‘White Tie’ dress code calls for you to break out the big guns. This is the most formal evening dress code and is typically associated with ultra exclusive events such as a charity ball. Full length dresses including ball gowns are required for ladies. Depending on how formal the event is, you may want to cover the shoulders with a shawl or shrug as well. Long gloves are also a common accessory for this dress code.

Less formal than the ‘White Tie’ event, this dress code still calls for a long or full length evening gown. A variation of the typical ‘Black Tie’ is the ‘Creative Black Tie’

Tie Dye for Grown-ups - Dec 8, 2009 - 9:28:59 AM

TYTibi-styleANIMsm.gif
Sure it’s associated with hippies and arts and crafts “crunchy” types, but the art of tie dying fabric was established long before the late 1960‘s and early 1970’s -  the decade most associated with this textile dying process made popular by celebrities such as Janis Joplin.

Fast forward to today where fashion forecasters are predicting a modern spin on this age old textile design will be all the rage in 2010.

Tie dye has appeared on spring and fall runways for several years - from Prada in 2004 to Balmain in 2007, but the trend has never fully taken off. From contemporary designers to high fashion houses, designers are giving it a shot again.

Trash to Treasure - Nov 30, 2009 - 2:20:13 PM

One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Truer words have never been spoken. For fashion enthusiasts who know the value of a dollar, or for those in search of clothes with a little more character than today’s mass produced department store fill, vintage and second hand stores are a godsend.

Vintage shopping is one of my favorite pastimes. When abroad with hours to kill on a lazy Sunday afternoon, browsing vintage stores and the rush of uncovering the perfect find provides the ultimate sense of accomplishment only a true shopper would understand.

Over the years I have scored fabulous finds during my vintage shopping escapades from vintage Versace belts in Rome, Italy to perfectly broken-in Armani riding boots in New York City. But, where to go in Nassau for a uniquely aged piece at a great price?
