Fitness Fashion: Working Out in Style - Jan 11, 2013 - 8:43:45 AM

XERCISE.gif
I’ve recently started working out regularly. Things started to jiggle in places they weren’t meant to, and before they got out of control, I decided to bite the bullet and get moving.

I haven’t strapped on a pair of sneakers to exercise in years. Needless to say my workout gear consisted of over-sized promotional t-shirts doled out by local companies over the years and shiny American Apparel tights that have no business on anyone much less someone attempting to workout comfortably.

Dressing for Your Shape: Shine Bright Like a Diamond - Nov 16, 2012 - 2:05:27 PM

TYRINA.gif
Sometimes all we need is a little nudge in the right direction to get us up and running. So here’s another installment in the “Dressing for Your Shape” series to get you on the right path before you start your holiday shopping.

Depending on which wardrobe specialist you speak with, there are a number of ways to describe and classify  a female’s figure. I prefer geometric shapes that everyone can easily visualize. We’ve covered the inverted triangle, triangle, oval and rectangle body types. This week is dedicated to the diamonds.

Cut-Off Couture - How to Rock Summer Shorts - Jun 29, 2012 - 3:37:49 PM

small_4.gif
A great summer staple to beat the heat while looking oh so chic is a flattering pair of shorts.

Not only for the super young, or super skinny – there’s a pair of flattering shorts to suit every age, body type and occasion.

The most universally flattering length is a city short, slightly longer than the average short, hitting just above, at or just below the knee. This length can be worn for virtually every occasion and by slightly altering he width of the leg, works well on every figure from a size 0 to a size 20...

Rompers Reloaded - May 4, 2012 - 8:52:58 AM

romper.gif
Rompers and jumpsuits catapulted back onto the fashion scene in 2006 and have been trending steadily for seasons since. It’s a trend that many women feel is best reserved for the very young and very thin, but rompers come in a wide variety of styles, with options to suit every age and size.

Lightweight, comfortable and versatile, like the perfect little dress, rompers too can take you from day to night. To add to its appeal, it’s an all-in-one outfit. Throw it on, toss in some simple accessories and a great pair of shoes and you’re out the door.

Many fashion writers have relegated the romper to the Do Not Wear category - but if you’ve been thinking about adding this fun and sexy item to your collection...

Vintage meets romance in this hot spring trend that adds a heavy dose of femininity to any wardrobe arsenal. Eyelet lace is one of the most common types of lace. Typically made out of cotton,  modern eyelet features a screen cut design that places decorative holes in the fabric is then embroidered to prevent fraying with a buttonhole stitch.

From spring tanks and dresses to kaftans and even sneakers, eyelet is popping up everywhere and at every price point making it an affordable trend to incorporate into your spring wardrobe. Here are four ways to rock this trend...

Take a Chance with a Chic Tapered Pant - Mar 23, 2012 - 12:08:27 AM

Sm-fabsugar.com.jpg
Oh how I love the femininity and ease of wearing a great dress. Alas, separates are having a go in the spotlight as well. Though it was highly popular several years ago, my current separate silhouette of choice is the tapered pant.
Don’t let the tapered pant of yesteryear scare you away from trying out this chic yet comfortable look that is au courant and uber flattering when worn the right way.

Highly popular during the 80s and 90s, the traditional tapered pant typically sits high on the waist, balloons at the hips and tapers at the ankle - think Duran Duran, Annie Lennox and of course MC Hammer...

Tantalize in Tangerine Tango, the 2012 Pantone Color of the Year - Jan 27, 2012 - 12:11:07 PM

TANGY.gif
Orange is the new black. This cheeky phrase was coined with the slew of celebrities donning orange prison gear for their bad behavior in recent years, but it’s even more relevant now that Pantone, the authority on color, selected tangerine tango as the color of the year for 2012.

The year 2011 saw a bright pink hue dubbed honeysuckle as the color of the year and 2012 builds on the selection of cheery colors with this vibrant reddish orange hue. A welcome burst of colour when compared to the subdued neutral hues that dominated fall.

How to Dress the Pear Shape - Jan 6, 2012 - 11:56:00 AM

SM-Pear-Shaped----glamour.com.jpg
One of the most common body types for women is the pear or triangle shape. Celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez and Beyonce boast this figure. You have this body type if you have a medium to full bust, narrow shoulders and substantially larger hips and thighs.

When dressing any body type, the goal is to create balance. With the pear shape, the aim is to visually widen the shoulders and create the illusion of a fuller chest while minimizing the hips, and thighs. There are many ways to achieve this by choosing your clothes wisely.

Three Trends to Trash before 2012 - Dec 28, 2011 - 7:22:08 PM

TIGHTS-Bands.gif
Cleaning out your closet is a necessary project in preparation for the new year and all the new trends that come along with it. Three trends you can do without next year are hippie headbands, jeggings and feather earrings.

Hippie headbands found fame when celebrities like Nicole Ritchie and mogul sisters Mary-Kate and Ashley Olson jumped on the wagon. With celebrities endorsing the nostalgic accessory, labels started cranking out high end versions like hot cakes. Maybe it’s my pronounced forehead and thick mane that made this trend completely unwearable and relegated it to my list of trends that should be trashed. I never got the rhyme or reason behind...

Make-A-Statement Accessories to Ring in the New Year - Dec 26, 2011 - 11:52:29 PM

sm-Sequin-Clutch---stylehive.com.jpg
With just several weeks left in 2011, it’s time to start thinking about the stellar outfit in which you will welcome the New Year.

New Years Eve (NYE) is a special occasion worthy of a special outfit, however there is no need to break the bank on all new pieces to create a memorable look that will both turn heads and look classic for years to come.

For many, a NYE outfit has been safely stored in the closet for weeks. However, if you’re still on the fence about your NYE plans and haven’t chosen your look yet, there is no need to fret...
